In The Struggle and the Conquest, Sir Novelle explores the paradigms of the
Trade Union Movement within the twin island territory of Antigua and Barbuda
and the Leeward Islands; the islands’ struggle for autonomy from colonial
plutocracy and Great Britain, the establishment of fair labor practices and the
development of the Islands’ economy and infrastructure.
The historical narration evolves into Part II The Locust Years, which
consolidates the activities leading up to Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence in
Association with Great Britain in February, 1967; perspective on the pitfalls
of a mono-pleveric administration, the ensuing social and political upheaval,
the creation of a two party political system, the destabilization of a
burgeoning economy, reconstruction and the attainment of full independence.
While his aspirations for a Caribbean Federation were not realized, Sir Novelle
put forth an argument on the benefits of a unified Caribbean Economy and
Government in Part III. Appendices and illustrations completes the compilation.
