The Internet and Scholarships
Get on the internet and type the website www.seaburn.com find this book and select the link: The Internet and Scholarships. Do it now! What you just did is a simple example of hyper linking. Hyper linking allows you to link with similar materials anywhere in the world, as long as it is on the Internet. So when you use the net to search for scholarships, you are going to different states or even different countries.
The Internet has vast amounts of information and you could easily get lost in the jumble of information presented. The sites that are listed below and in other parts of this book are hyperlinked to make it easy for you. While on the site point the mouse on any of the hypertext, or websites and follow the instruction (hold down the control button and then click the mouse). Hypertext or hyperlinked is usually underlined or in a different color from the rest of the text; when you point the mouse on it, the mouse changes to a finger or gives some sort of information. If the links do not come in automatically, you will have to type the website into the address field exactly as they are listed. If you wish to search on your own, use search engines such as Yahoo, WebCrawler, Alta-Vista and Dogpile and then type in keywords. For example, if you are interested in medical scholarships, you would type in: “medical AND scholarships or medical + scholarships”. Note that the “and” is all caps. If you wish to limit your search to NY you would type: “medical AND scholarships AND NY”. Practice!

All-USA Academic Team for Community Colleges
The All-USA Academic Team for Community Colleges competition is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the American Association of Community Colleges and USA TODAY. This program recognizes scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in community, technical and junior colleges.
Presidents of eligible colleges or their designees are invited to submit as many as two nominations from each campus of their institutions. In selecting their institutions' nominees, presidents are asked to consider outstanding grade point averages; participation in honors programs; awards, honors, and recognition for academic achievement and service to the college and the community.
Students should expect to graduate with an associate's degree between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002. The student must post a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 grading scale for all college credit course work completed. Students must have completed twelve semester hours (or quarter hours equivalent).

Centennial Scholars Program
In conjunction with the Community College Centennial celebration, The American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa are pleased to announce the Centennial Scholars Program. The Coca-Cola Foundation presented over $102,000 in scholarships to 51 outstanding community college students, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the two-year college system. The 51 Centennial Scholars received stipends of $2,000 each, and each institution received special recognition at the AACC Convention. Through the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is awarding annually 400 scholarships to students attending higher-education institutions granting two-year degrees.
The highest scoring All-USA applicant from each of the 50 states and American Samoa has been named a Centennial Scholar. Each Centennial Scholar represented his/her state in the Centennial Celebration Ceremonies held at the AACC Convention April 4-7, 2001, in Chicago, Illinois.

Details The Gates Millennium Scholars program is aimed at expanding access to higher education for students who reflect the diverse society in which we live. The foundation seeks to increase the number of African Americans, American Indians/Alaska natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Individuals with academic promise, unmet financial need and demonstrates potential.

Gates Cambridge Scholars Program In establishing the Gates Cambridge Scholars program, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation hopes to create a network of future leaders from around the world who will bring new vision and commitment to improving the life circumstances of citizens in their respective countries. Over time, it is anticipated that Gates Cambridge Scholars will become leaders in helping to address global problems related to health, equity, technology, and learning - all areas that the foundation is deeply engaged in. The program will offer about 225 graduate scholarships at any one time. The scholarships will support study as an affiliated student or to pursue taught or research courses of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge beginning in October 2001. Washington State Achievers Program Bill and Melinda Gates believe that access to higher education opens doors to opportunities, especially for low-income students and students of color. A recent College Board report revealed that more than 40 percent of children from high-income families received a bachelor’s degree or higher within five years of high school graduation, compared with only six percent of those in the lowest income group. The Washington State Achievers Program hopes to address this disparity in Washington by working comprehensively with 16 high schools serving large low-income populations. The program will encourage high school redesign efforts that raise academic achievement and increase college-going rates of all students, especially low-income students.
