Recently BBN had the privilege to meet Paul Robeson, Jr., in
an interview on the release of his new book, The Undiscovered
Paul Robeson, An Artist’s
Journey 1898-1939. As Mr. Robeson spoke of his father, Paul Robeson,
Sr., the intonations in his voice, the emotions in his eyes conveyed a son
with immense love and admiration for a great man.
Paul Robeson Jr. reveals
the untold story of the rise of a legendary actor, singer, scholar, and
activist. He traces the dramatic arc of his rise to fame, painting a
definitive picture of Paul Robeson. His father was an escaped slave, his
mother a descendant of freedmen. With a law degree from Columbia University,
a professional football career, title roles in Eugene O’Neill plays and in
Shakespeare’s Othello, a concert career in America and Europe, Robeson was
one of the most compelling figures of the twentieth century.
BBN: What is your greatest memory of your father?
PR: My greatest memory of my father was seeing him perform in the lead
role of Shakespeare’s Othello in the 1943-1944 record-breaking Broadway
