Ajamu Jumal
was born and grew up in the city of Pasadena California.
Pasadena in the early 1950s, like most cities outside the South, was void
of Jim Crow signs; still racism and Black on Black attitudes were silently
entrenched. But change is gonna come and the peoples and events of those
volatile times spring to life in the early pages of Jumal's historical
novel, Spiritual Shackles.
Jumal's enthusiasm
for history dates back to his earliest recollections, and this passion
would continue into his college days, attending Pasadena City College, Cal
State U. Los Angeles, Cal State U. San Bernardino and in the University of
California at Berkeley. He received his bachelor's degree in History and
his master's degree in Education.
Jumal spent a year
traveling on the continent of Africa, with most time spent with families
in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Liberia. He also toured in Europe
with the musical-opera "Carmen Jones", employed as teacher/tutor for minor
children the cast. Most of his travel in Europe was in France, Germany,
Holland, Spain, Belgium and Britain. Jumal's continued travels, including
researching Spiritual Shackles, has led him to Bahia, Brazil and the
Caribbean countries of Haiti, Belize, Jamaica and Yucatan, Mexico.
In his historical
novel Spiritual Shackles, Jumal's travels and life experiences bleed onto
the pages in vivid detail, not just in the powerful writing and intriguing
histories, but also in the imaginative storytelling.
Jumal currently
resides with his family in Southern California.
