ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dr. George Pilitsis is an Associate Professor of Classics and Modern
Greek Studies at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of
Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts. He has taught courses in Classics and
has introduced and developed programs of Modern Greek Studies at the
University of Southern California and Rutgers University in New Jersey. He
has also taught courses in Modern Greek as a visiting professor at Princeton
University. Professor Pilitsis currently is teaching courses in Modern Greek
language and literature, and courses in Classics.

Professor Pilitsis' scholarly interests and areas of research concentrate on
the social and cultural history of Greece from antiquity to the present, and
also on the literary accomplishments of contemporary Greek writers.
Professor Pilitsis has published extensively on the subject of Classical
mythology and Modern Greek folklore, as well as critical studies of Modern
Greek Poetry. His translations and criticism of numerous poems by renowned
poets of Modern Greece such as Yannis Ritsos, Nikiforos Vrettakos, Nikos Gatsos,
Dionysios Solomos, and novelists such as Menis Koumandareas were published in
various U.S. and Greek literary journals. In 1993, Professor Pilitsis received
the Hellenic Association of Translators of Literature Award in Athens, Greece,
for his book of translation and critical study of six dramatic monologues by
Yannis Ritsos.
